Peacemaking and "silencing the guns" is becoming ever more difficult in a multipolar world. High-level peace processes are losing their effectiveness, and comprehensive peace agreements are rarely being negotiated anymore. Duplication of and competition between peace processes has become the standard, third-party mediators are losing their leverage with conflict parties, and the mediation (support) landscape has become more complex.
Using the cases of Sudan and Yemen, with various processes and third-party efforts ongoing, this PeaceLab will draw lessons learned for the operationalisation of peacemaking in the 21st century. We will assess the status quo of both cases and the challenges of formal and informal processes, multitrack engagement and coordination.
