Diverging economic, political and national interests have led to changes in foreign policy priorities and growing competition in the arena of peace and global security. Increasingly, traditional peacemaking actors are being replaced with new and emerging powers, bringing new approaches, ideas and principles of peacemaking to the fore that raise questions about the utility of prevalent peace practices. Is liberal peacemaking - based on norms, values and principles - still adequate to deal with the complex, multifaceted, transboundary and geopolitical conflicts of our time? What are promising approaches and tools for dealing with contemporary conflicts. What can we learn from each other?
This panel explores how international actors perceive peacemaking in this era of new geopolitical realities. It will discuss questions around complementarity, coherence, effectiveness of old and new peacemaking tools.
